HempSolo was created in response to the need for visually lightweight yet durable tables made from renewable materials. Its structure uses laminated boards made of Strumber Hemp - a hemp-based lumber that absorbs approximately 1689 kg of CO₂ per cubic meter. For this piece, the absorption value reached 101 kg of CO₂. The table is part of the ReHemptation collection, developed in collaboration with Husarska Design Studio, which explores the potential of annual plants as a genuine alternative to wood. HempSolo combines ergonomics with contemporary design and serves as proof that materials with a low environmental impact can offer high durability in practical applications.

Designing Responsibly: From Concept to Conscious Materiality

Challenge

HempSolo was developed to rethink what a modern table made from plant-based materials can be. The design challenge was to create a piece that:

  • appears visually lightweight while remaining structurally strong,
  • demonstrates that annual plants can replace traditional wood in premium furniture,
  • balances ergonomic comfort with a clean, contemporary aesthetic suitable for everyday use.

Material & Sustainability

The table is made from Strumber Hemp, a laminated hemp-based lumber that sequesters approximately 1,689 kg of CO₂ per cubic meter. For HempSolo itself, this translates to 101 kg of CO₂ absorbed and locked inside the material. Using annual crops such as hemp aligns the project with regenerative design principles: fast-growing plants, high carbon absorption, and a significantly reduced environmental footprint compared to timber. As part of the ReHemptation collection, HempSolo showcases the potential of renewable plant fibers as a viable, durable alternative to wood.

Impact

Form & Manufacturing

HempSolo combines ergonomic proportions with a minimalist form that highlights the natural character of Strumber Hemp. The laminated boards reveal a distinctive fiber pattern, giving the table a warm, organic expression while remaining robust in daily use. The collaboration with Husarska Design Studio emphasized functional geometry, clean lines, and long-lasting construction. Each manufacturing decision—from material thickness to joint detailing—was guided by the goal of proving that low-impact materials can deliver high-performance furniture.

Exhibitions & Encounters

HempSolo debuted during Milano Design Week 2024, where it introduced audiences to the possibilities of hemp-based lumber. Since then, the table has been featured at several leading European design events, including the Łódź Design Festival 2024, the Polish Job 2.0 exhibition during Dutch Design Week 2024, 4 Design Days 2025, and Warsaw Home 2025. At each venue, HempSolo drew attention for its refined simplicity, innovative material, and the compelling story of turning annual plants into durable, elegant furniture.

Quotes about HempSolo

“The challenge was to make the table look light, but feel solid — like a quiet confidence built into the material itself.”
“When you touch the surface, you’re touching captured CO₂. That’s the beauty of hemp — it works for the planet long before it becomes furniture.”
“We didn’t want to hide the material. HempSolo is honest — the fibers remain visible, alive, and part of the story.”

“Designing HempSolo was about proving a simple point: sustainability doesn’t have to look alternative. It can look sophisticated.”
